Global Butyl Rubber (IIR) Market Outlook to 2029

Report Description

Butyl Rubber (isobutylene-isoprene rubber) is the copolymerization of isobutylene and isoprene manufactured, and it is a synthetic rubber with valuable characteristics such as flexibility, good shock absorption, low gas, chemical inertness, moisture permeability, excellent weather, and abrasion resistance coupled with the resistance against ozone and oxygen attack. According to BlueQuark Research & Consulting, the global Butyl Rubber market is expected to witness a significant growth rate during the forecasted period. Factors such as the increasing demand for OEM tires due to the rising automobile industry are anticipated for Butyl Rubber to increase market growth in the predicted periods. Further, the growing demand for tires for new vehicles and replacing old tires are driving the automotive industry, which is expected to drive the need for the Butyl Rubber market in the forecasted period. Furthermore, Bromobutyl rubber has the ability to cure rapidly using vulcanization systems by yielding very low extractable residues. Thus, it is an elastomer of choice for the pharmaceutical industry and health care applications. However, the use of Butyl Rubber is not sustainable and negatively impacts the environment. This may hinder the global Butyl Rubber growth in the market.

Butyl Rubber is extensively used in adhesives and sealants as binders, modifiers, and tackifiers.

The tubes and Tires segment held the largest share in the Butyl Rubber market. The primary utilization of Butyl rubber is in the automotive sector, where it is worn to manufacture tires. Prices of natural rubber are pretty volatile, which can act as an opportunity for the market. Compared to natural rubber, in terms of tear strength, aging, and heat resistance, superior product properties are awaited to provide a positive scope for Butyl Rubber market growth over the forecasted period. The use of synthetic rubber has surged when compared to natural rubber. Rubber is a vital fabricating component of a tire. In the manufacturing process, there are three types of rubber used natural rubber (NR), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), and polybutadiene rubber (PBR). Among several application areas for butyl rubber, tires and tubes are constantly positioned as the dominant segment in the global Butyl Rubber market. Over 200 crude materials make up the composition of a tire, ranging from wire, chemicals, black carbon, oil, rubber, polyesternylon, and steel. Passenger car tires manufacture the bulk of the manufacturers of tires, with 45% of all tires produced, followed by 30% of truck and bus tires. The smallest group of tires made are Industrial tires. Passenger tires are designed for a various range of driving experiences. The increasing use of regular and Chloro butyl in the manufacturing of tires is predicted to provide a positive scope for the Butyl Rubber market growth over the forecasted period. These products offer benefits such as consistent inflation pressure, durability, and heat stability. Bromo and Chloro butyl show almost similar properties. However, Bromo butyl provides higher strength and incurs lower manufacturing costs than chloro butyl, which is expected to positively affect the market growth.

The Asia Pacific region is awaited to dominate the global Butyl Rubber market in production and demand during the forecasted period. China has a production and labor advantage due to which it manufactures butyl rubber at low prices compared to other countries. Butyl rubber has a high need from India and Japan for various end use industries like automotive and construction. Rapid growth in the building & construction industry also increases the demand for bromobutyl rubber in adhesive and sealants applications. Bromobutyl rubber has several properties, such as air impermeability, heat resistance, weather resistance, and aging resistance, driving the need for bromobutyl rubber in the construction industry. Butyl Rubber can be classified as standard rubber and halogenated rubber (chlorine and bromine). Halogenated rubbers dominate the market owing to their properties compared to regular rubber, such as better curing, vulcanization efficiency, etc. This will positively affect the tire industry as more than 60 percent of the global natural, and synthetic rubber is consumed during tire and tube manufacturing. Butyl rubber is an indispensable raw material worn in tire and tube manufacturing. The global need for tires and tubes is expected to increase butyl rubber demand during the forecasted period. The most critical divisions of the automotive industry include commercial vehicles and passenger cars. China ranks among the world's largest automobile markets in sales and production. These elastomeric and significant properties make it a suitable material for inner tubes and vacuum or high-pressure applications under environmental conditions. Apart from inner tubes of tires and high-pressure tubes, other applications of Butyl Rubbers are gaskets, O-rings, Seals, Liners, diaphragms, wires and cables, hot melts, bottle closures, caulks, and weather stripping. The usage of Bromo butyl for the manufacturing of medical stoppers is likely to offer a positive scope for product demand. The high heat resistance properties of the product support the sterilization of stoppers that are used in the medical industry.

The global Butyl Rubber market is partially fragmented. The major players in the global Butyl Rubber market are Lanxess AGExxonMobil Chemical CompanyReliance Industries LimitedJSR Corporation, and H.B. Fuller Company, among others.

In September 2019, Sibur and Reliance Industries Ltd. launched butyl rubber production at the joint integrated petrochemical plant Reliance Sibur Elastomers Private Ltd. in the Indian city of Jamnagar. The manufacturing facility will have a yearly capacity is 120,000 tonnes.

In November 2019, Sibur closed the sale of some of its synthetic rubber production assets in Togliatti to Tatneft. Tatnef has acquired Sibur's production facilities for synthetic rubber, MTBE high-octane fuel component, butadiene, isoprene, and other intermediates. The facility can produce 82,000 metric tons per year of emulsion styrene-butadiene (ESBR 60) and butyl rubber (IIR75).
