In a significant move to bolster its presence in the renewable energy sector, Cargill has finalized the acquisition of the remaining 50% stake in SJC Bioenergia, thereby gaining full ownership of the Brazilian bioenergy company. This strategic acquisition aligns with Cargill's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and marks a notable expansion of its operations in Brazil.
SJC Bioenergia, now rebranded as Cargill Bioenergia, operates two agro-industrial units located in Quirinópolis and Cachoeira Dourada, both in the state of Goiás. These facilities process sugarcane and corn to produce raw sugar, hydrated and anhydrous ethanol, corn oil, and high-protein distillers' dried grains (DDGs). Additionally, the company generates electricity, contributing to Brazil's renewable energy matrix. With a workforce of approximately 4,500 employees, Cargill Bioenergia plays a vital role in the local economy and the broader bioenergy industry.
Paulo Sousa, President of Cargill in Brazil and of the Agricultural Business in Latin America, emphasized the significance of this acquisition:
"We have been partners in SJC Bioenergia since 2011. Consolidating control of the company is a recognition of the potential and results achieved by the business, as well as an opportunity to leverage its full potential, taking advantage of synergies with the operations already existing in Cargill’s portfolio."
This acquisition comes as Cargill celebrates 60 years of operations in Brazil, during which the company has invested over R$6.8 billion in its Brazilian ventures. The full ownership of Cargill Bioenergia is expected to enhance Cargill's capabilities in producing ethanol from both sugarcane and corn, complementing its existing biofuel production primarily concentrated in the soybean sector.
The transaction received the necessary approvals from regulatory bodies, including the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), ensuring compliance with Brazilian antitrust laws. With this acquisition, Cargill reaffirms its commitment to sustainable agriculture and renewable energy, positioning itself to meet the growing global demand for cleaner energy sources.
As Cargill continues to invest in Brazil's agricultural and energy sectors, the full integration of Cargill Bioenergia is poised to contribute significantly to the country's renewable energy landscape and economic development.
